TIMSS: Fourth grade students reaching the advanced international benchmark of mathematics achievement (%) is the share of 4th grade students scoring at least 625 on the mathematics assessment. Students at this benchmark can apply their understanding and knowledge in a variety of relatively complex situations and explain their reasoning. They can solve a variety of multi-step word problems involving whole numbers. Students at this level show an increasing understanding of fractions and decimals. They can apply knowledge of a range of two- and three-dimensional shapes in a variety of situations. They can interpret and represent data to solve multi-step problems. Data reflect country performance in the stated year according to TIMSS reports, but may not be comparable across years or countries. Total number of female students who have crossed a national or territorial border for the purpose of education and are now enrolled in tertiary institutions outside their country of origin.
Number of years a person of school entrance age can expect to spend within the specified level of education. For a child of a certain age a, the school life expectancy is calculated as the sum of the age specific enrolment rates for the levels of education specified. The part of the enrolment that is not distributed by age is divided by the school-age population for the level of education they are enrolled in, and multiplied by the duration of that level of education. The result is then added to the sum of the age-specific enrolment rates. A relatively high SLE indicates greater probability for children to spend more years in education and higher overall retention within the education system. It must be noted that the expected number of years does not necessarily coincide with the expected number of grades of education completed, because of repetition. Since school life expectancy is an average based on participation in different levels of education, the expected number of years of schooling may be pulled down by the magnitude of children who never go to school. Those children who are in school may benefit from many more years of education than the average.
TIMSS: Fourth grade students who did not reach the low international benchmark of mathematics achievement (%) is the share of 4th grade students scoring below 400 on the mathematics assessment. The indicator is the percentage of students with achievement too low for estimation on TIMSS and TIMSS Numeracy combined. Students were considered to have achievement too low for estimation if their performance on the assessment was no better than could be achieved by simply guessing on the multiple-choice assessment items. Data reflect country performance in the stated year according to TIMSS reports, but may not be comparable across years or countries.
