Most visitors need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program, $21) or B-1/B-2 visa. ESTA is available for 40 countries and allows 90-day stays. Apply at least 72 hours before travel. For longer stays, work visas (H-1B, L-1, O-1) require employer sponsorship. The EB-5 investor visa requires a $800,000-$1,050,000 investment. Digital nomad visas are not yet available at the federal level.

Domestic flights are the most efficient way to cover long distances. Amtrak rail connects major cities but is slow outside the Northeast Corridor. Greyhound and FlixBus offer budget intercity options. Ride-sharing (Uber/Lyft) is ubiquitous in cities. Car rental is affordable but factor in gas, tolls, and parking. International driving permits are recognized but not always required.

American cuisine is incredibly diverse, reflecting its immigrant heritage. Must-try regional foods include New England clam chowder, Southern barbecue, Tex-Mex in the Southwest, deep-dish pizza in Chicago, and fresh seafood on both coasts. Craft beer and bourbon are booming. Portions are large by international standards. Water is free at restaurants. The legal drinking age is 21.

Costs vary enormously by location. New York, San Francisco, and Hawaii are among the most expensive. The Southeast and Midwest offer much better value. Budget travelers can manage on $75-100/day outside major cities. Mid-range travelers should expect $150-250/day. Accommodation is the biggest expense, consider Airbnb or motels on road trips.
