Jurisdiction Guide
Sri Lanka
Overview
Sri Lanka sits just south of India, shaped like a teardrop in the Indian Ocean. The country blends Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Christian traditions into daily life. Agriculture and clothing exports drive much of the economy, but tourism is big too. Ancient ruins and tea fields set it apart from other South Asian nations.
Best Time to Visit
December to March offers the best weather for the south and west coasts, while May to September suits the east coast. Monsoon patterns split the island, plan around them for beach plans.
Local Tips
Always carry cash, small shops and tuk-tuks rarely accept cards. English is widely spoken, but learning basic Sinhala or Tamil greetings goes a long way. Local buses are cheap but can be packed; trains offer better comfort for long trips. Buy a local SIM at the airport for affordable data. Tipping is expected at restaurants, about 10%.
Cultural Etiquette
Dress modestly, especially in temples and rural areas, cover knees and shoulders. Remove shoes and hats before entering homes or religious sites. Use your right hand for giving or eating; the left is considered impolite. Ask before taking photos of people and avoid selfies with Buddha statues. Public displays of affection are frowned upon.
Safety Warnings
Petty theft happens in busy areas, keep bags zipped. Monkeys are cute but will grab food or phones if left unattended. Road rules are loosely followed, cross streets carefully and avoid driving unless confident. Dengue fever can appear after rains, so use repellent and avoid stagnant water.
Visa & Entry Advice
Most visitors need to apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival. A few Asian countries get visa-free or visa-on-arrival access. Tourist visas are for 30 days and can usually be extended once. Long-stay options for digital nomads are being discussed, but not launched officially.
Getting Around
Intercity trains connect big cities and offer scenic views, especially to Kandy and Ella. Local buses reach nearly every town but can be slow or crowded. Tuk-tuks are good for short city hops, always agree on the fare. Ride-hailing apps run in major cities but are less reliable in small towns.
Food & Drink
Rice with spicy curry is a daily staple, with hoppers (crispy pancakes) for breakfast or snacks. Kottu roti, a mix of chopped bread, vegetables, and egg or meat, feeds locals late at night. Fresh coconut water is sold on the street, and Ceylon tea is served everywhere. Vegetarians have many choices, especially in Hindu and Buddhist regions, though dishes can be fiery. Street food is tempting but choose busy stalls to avoid stomach troubles.
Cost Advice
Sri Lanka is affordable for backpackers, dorm beds from $7, roadside meals under $2. Mid-range travel means guesthouses and private rooms, at $20–40 a night. Colombo and Galle are pricier than inland towns. Trains between big cities cost as little as $2 in second class.
