Spain

Overview

A passionate Mediterranean nation offering an exceptional quality of life, Spain combines rich history, world-class cuisine, lively cities, and diverse landscapes. From Barcelona's modernist architecture to Andalusia's Moorish heritage, Spain attracts millions of visitors and a growing community of remote workers and retirees. The cost of living remains attractive by Western European standards.

Best Time to Visit

April to June and September to October offer ideal weather and manageable crowds. July-August is very hot in the interior and south but perfect for northern Spain. Barcelona and the Mediterranean coast are best May-October. The Canary Islands have year-round spring-like weather. Semana Santa (Holy Week, March/April) processions are spectacular. San Fermín (Running of the Bulls) is July 6-14 in Pamplona.

Local Tips

Meal times are later than you expect, lunch at 2-3pm, dinner at 9-10pm. "Sobremesa" (lingering at the table after a meal) is a treasured tradition. Siesta time (2-5pm) means many shops close. Tipping is modest, rounding up or leaving small change is sufficient. Tap water is safe. The "menu del día" (daily set lunch) is incredible value at €10-15 for multiple courses with a drink. "Cañas" (small beers) are the social currency.

Cultural Etiquette

Spaniards greet with two cheek kisses between friends. Personal space is closer than in Northern Europe. Loud, animated conversation is enthusiasm, not aggression. Dress well but casually, Spaniards are stylish. Family and social life take priority over work. August is sacred vacation time. Regional identities (Catalan, Basque, Galician, Andalusian) are strong, respect local cultures and languages.

Safety Warnings

Spain is very safe overall. Pickpocketing is the main concern in Barcelona (Las Ramblas, metro), Madrid (Sol, Gran Vía), and Seville tourist areas. Be cautious of common scams: the "friendship bracelet," petition signers, and fake police. Beach theft is common, never leave belongings unattended. Extreme heat in summer (40°C+) in the south is a real health risk. Emergency: 112.

Hidden Gems

Beyond Barcelona and Madrid, explore the white villages (pueblos blancos) of Andalusia, the green coast of Asturias and Cantabria, the volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote, or the medieval city of Cáceres in Extremadura. The Caminito del Rey walkway in Málaga is thrilling. Ronda's gorge is dramatic. San Sebastián has more Michelin stars per capita than almost anywhere. The Picos de Europa mountains rival the Alps without the crowds.

Visa & Entry Advice

EU/EEA citizens have free movement. Non-EU citizens from many countries can stay 90 days in the Schengen area. Spain offers a Digital Nomad Visa (minimum €2,520/month income) with favorable tax rates. The Non-Lucrative Visa suits retirees with passive income. The Golden Visa requires a €500,000+ real estate investment. The Entrepreneur Visa targets innovative business founders. The Beckham Law offers a flat 24% tax rate for new residents.

Getting Around

Spain's AVE high-speed trains are excellent, Madrid to Barcelona in 2.5 hours, Madrid to Seville in 2.5 hours. Renfe operates the rail network, book early for best prices. BlaBlaCar is popular for intercity travel. Budget airlines (Vueling, Ryanair) connect cities cheaply. Madrid and Barcelona have extensive metro systems. Car rental is important for rural Spain and the coast. Ferries connect the mainland to the Balearic and Canary Islands.

Food & Drink

Spanish cuisine is a highlight. Must-try: jamón ibérico, patatas bravas, paella in Valencia (never elsewhere, according to Valencians), gazpacho, pintxos in San Sebastián, tortilla española, and churros con chocolate. Tapas culture means eating is social, hopping between bars. Spanish wine is outstanding and affordable, Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Albariño. Sherry from Jerez. Cava is excellent Spanish sparkling wine. Vermouth is having a renaissance.

Cost Advice

Spain offers excellent value for Western Europe. Budget: €50-80/day. Mid-range: €100-180/day. Madrid and Barcelona are most expensive; Andalusia and the interior are cheaper. The menu del día is the best deal in European dining (€10-15). Wine in supermarkets starts at €2-3. Rent in mid-sized cities: €500-900/month. The Canary Islands offer great value with low VAT. Compared to neighbors France and Italy, Spain is notably cheaper for similar quality of life.
