Overview
A city-state that punches far above its weight, Singapore is one of the world's most prosperous, clean, and efficiently run nations. This multicultural hub at the crossroads of East and West offers a thriving financial sector, world-class infrastructure, excellent healthcare, and a food scene that's among the best on Earth. Its strategic location makes it a gateway to all of Southeast Asia.
Best Time to Visit
Singapore is equatorial with consistent weather year-round, expect 30-32°C and humidity. There's no "bad" time to visit. February-April tends to be driest. November-January sees more rain. Major events include Chinese New Year (January/February), the F1 Grand Prix (September), and the Great Singapore Sale (June-August). Avoid the haze season (August-October) caused by Indonesian fires.
Local Tips
The MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) is efficient, clean, and affordable, get an EZ-Link card. Hawker centers offer some of the world's best food at incredibly low prices. Chewing gum is banned (importing for personal use is allowed). Fines for littering, jaywalking, and eating/drinking on public transport are enforced. English is widely spoken, Singlish (local English dialect) adds flavor. Air conditioning is aggressive, carry a light jacket.
Cultural Etiquette
Singapore is multicultural, Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Western cultures coexist. Remove shoes before entering homes and some shops. Use the right hand for giving and receiving, the left is considered unclean in Malay and Indian cultures. Avoid pointing with one finger, use an open hand. Public displays of affection are subdued. Religion is respected, dress modestly when visiting temples and mosques.
Safety Warnings
Singapore is one of the world's safest cities, it regularly ranks #1 globally. Drug laws are extremely strict, including the death penalty for trafficking. Vandalism carries caning sentences. Smoking is banned in most public places with heavy fines. While crime is very low, stay aware of online scams. Heat exhaustion is a real concern, stay hydrated and use sunscreen.
Visa & Entry Advice
Citizens of many countries get 30-90 day visa-free entry. Singapore offers one of the world's most attractive environments for business and work. The Employment Pass targets professionals (minimum salary S$5,000+). The EntrePass is for entrepreneurs. The ONE Pass targets top talent with S$30,000+ monthly salary or equivalent achievements. The Tech.Pass targets experienced tech professionals. Permanent residency is competitive.
Getting Around
The MRT and bus network covers the entire island efficiently. Grab (Southeast Asian ride-hailing) is ubiquitous and affordable. Taxis are plentiful and metered. Car ownership is deliberately expensive (Certificate of Entitlement costs S$60,000+). Changi Airport is consistently rated the world's best, the Jewel complex is a destination itself. Singapore is a hub for flights throughout Southeast Asia and beyond.
Food & Drink
Singapore's food scene is legendary. Must-try hawker dishes: Hainanese chicken rice, laksa, char kway teow, satay, roti prata, and chili crab. Hawker Chan has the world's cheapest Michelin-starred meal. The city also has 50+ Michelin-starred restaurants for fine dining. Tiger Beer is the local lager. Singapore Sling at Raffles Hotel is iconic. Kopi (local coffee) culture is unique, order "kopi-o" for black.
Cost Advice
Singapore is expensive for accommodation and alcohol but hawker food is incredibly affordable (S$3-6 per dish). Budget: S$80-120/day (staying in hostels, eating at hawkers). Mid-range: S$200-350/day. Hotels average S$150-350/night. Alcohol is heavily taxed, a beer at a bar costs S$12-18. Public transport is very affordable at S$1-3 per trip. Many attractions have free areas. Gardens by the Bay conservatories are S$28.
