Jurisdiction Guide
Senegal
Overview
Senegal sits on the Atlantic coast of West Africa, with flat plains and a long sandy shoreline. Its capital, Dakar, is a hub for music, arts, and trade. Fishing, agriculture, and tourism drive much of the economy. French is the official language, but Wolof is widely spoken day-to-day.
Best Time to Visit
November to May is the driest and most comfortable period, especially in Dakar and along the coast. The rainy season from June to October brings humidity and muddy roads, mainly in the south and interior.
Local Tips
Cash is most common outside Dakar, but some big stores accept cards. Cell coverage is good; buy an Orange or Free SIM at the airport with your passport. French or Wolof helps a lot, few speak English well. Long-distance travel uses sept-place shared taxis or buses. Small cash tips (5-10%) are appreciated but not required.
Cultural Etiquette
Greet people with a handshake or 'Asalaam aleikum'. Dress modestly, especially in rural areas or at religious sites. Eating with the right hand is polite. Smoking is uncommon in public. Ask before taking someone's photo.
Safety Warnings
Pickpocketing happens in crowded areas of Dakar. Roads outside cities can be rough and poorly lit, avoid night driving if possible. Malaria is present, so carry repellent and consider prophylaxis. Street food is tasty but stick to busy stalls to avoid stomach issues.
Visa & Entry Advice
Most EU, UK, and US citizens can visit visa-free for up to 90 days. Other nationalities may need an e-visa or apply at consulates. Extensions are possible but involve paperwork in Dakar. Residency options exist for retirees or workers, but digital nomad visas are not yet available.
Getting Around
In Dakar, yellow taxis are everywhere, bargain before getting in. Intercity travel relies on sept-place taxis, buses, and some newer minibus routes. BlaBlaCar is growing for shared rides. Domestic flights link Dakar with Ziguinchor if you want to skip the long road.
Food & Drink
Try thieboudienne, Senegal's iconic fish with rice, or chicken yassa with onion sauce. Ataya (sweet mint tea) gets served in three rounds almost everywhere. Most meals are eaten from a shared platter. Vegans and vegetarians should ask ahead, meat and fish are common in most dishes. Drink bottled water and avoid ice unless you trust the source.
Cost Advice
Dakar costs more than other cities, with basic hotels from $35 and mid-range around $70 a night. Local meals run $2–$5, and longer taxi rides between cities $10–$30 per seat. Cheaper stays and lower food costs can be found inland or along the coast near Mbour.
