The dry seasons from mid-December to February and June to early September are best for travel, especially for gorilla trekking and national parks. Rainy months can make rural roads muddy and harder to travel.

Cash is widely used, but mobile money and cards are common in Kigali. Always agree on the price before using motos (motorcycle taxis), as they are the main urban transport. Kinyarwanda is the main language, but English and French are frequently spoken in cities. SIM cards are cheap and easy to buy with a passport. Tipping is not compulsory but rounding up small bills in restaurants is appreciated.

Greetings matter; a handshake with the right hand and a light hug for friends is usual. Dress modestly, especially in rural regions and around churches. If invited to eat, wait for the host to start and always wash hands before a meal. Pointing at people is considered rude. Photos of government buildings or police are not allowed without permission.

Kigali is safer than most African capitals, though petty theft happens in markets and on buses. Roads can be narrow and winding, with unpredictable drivers and frequent rain, so caution is needed if driving outside the city. Tap water is not safe to drink. Avoid walking alone after dark in quiet areas.

Most visitors can get a visa on arrival at Kigali airport or land borders for 30 days, including EU, US, UK, Australia, and Canada passport holders. An East Africa Tourist Visa lets you visit Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda on one pass. Rwanda has no dedicated digital nomad visa yet, but business and conference visas are easy to obtain.

Intercity buses are reliable and run on schedule; tickets are affordable and sold at main bus terminals. Motorbike taxis (motos) rule city streets and are metered by law in Kigali. Car rentals are available, but driving outside Kigali demands caution due to road conditions. Ride-hailing apps like Yego and VW Move operate in Kigali.

Try brochettes (skewered meat), ugali, and isombe (cassava leaves cooked with groundnut paste). Street vendors serve grilled corn and sambaza fish near the lakes. Bars and restaurants sell popular local beers like Primus and Mutzig. Vegetarian food is common since beans, potatoes, and plantains are staples. Food in rural areas is basic, but in Kigali, you can find international and upscale choices, often with good hygiene.

Budget travelers can get by on $30-50 per day with hostels and bus travel. Kigali is costlier than provincial towns; upscale hotels range from $100 up. A typical moto ride in Kigali starts at around 500 RWF (about $0.40), while a decent local meal costs 2,000-4,000 RWF ($1.50-$3). Gorilla trekking permits are the biggest splurge, at $1,500 per person.
