Jurisdiction Guide
Kenya
Overview
Kenya stretches from the Indian Ocean coast to the Great Rift Valley and highland regions. Nairobi is the economic hub, while agriculture and tourism shape most livelihoods. The country is home to over 40 ethnic groups, each with unique languages and traditions. Kenya is known for its wildlife reserves and fast-growing technology sector.
Best Time to Visit
The best months to visit are July to October when the weather is dry and game viewing is excellent, especially in the Maasai Mara. Coastal areas are hottest between December and March.
Local Tips
Carry some cash since card acceptance can be limited outside major cities. Mobile money (M-Pesa) is widely used for payment. Matatus (shared minibuses) are cheap but chaotic; taxis and ride-hailing apps offer safer transport. English and Swahili are both official, but a basic greeting in Swahili goes a long way. SIM cards are easy to get at the airport or from Safaricom shops.
Cultural Etiquette
Greet elders with a handshake and a smile. Modest clothing is best, especially in rural or coastal Muslim areas. Eating with the right hand is the norm. Remove shoes before entering homes. Photograph people only with their permission.
Safety Warnings
Petty theft is common in crowded places, particularly in Nairobi and Mombasa. Roads outside main cities can be risky due to poor lighting and reckless driving. Malaria risk exists in most areas except Nairobi and the highlands. Watch for fake safari operators and only book through trusted sources.
Visa & Entry Advice
Most visitors need to apply online for an eVisa before travel; the process is simple and usually fast. Some East African Community nationals have visa-free access. Extensions can be managed within Kenya but must be done before expiry. Long-term stays require a different permit or a business residency class; Kenya does not offer a digital nomad visa.
Getting Around
Domestic flights connect Nairobi with coastal and regional towns easily. The SGR train offers a smooth ride between Nairobi and Mombasa. Buses and matatus serve most routes but vary in safety and comfort. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt work well in big cities; self-driving is possible but challenging due to road conditions.
Food & Drink
Ugali (maize porridge) is the staple, usually served with sukuma wiki (greens) or nyama choma (grilled meat). Mandazi, a sweet fried bread, is common for breakfast. Swahili cuisine on the coast features coconut-heavy curries and samaki wa kupaka (fish in coconut sauce). Tap water is not safe to drink; buy bottled water. Vegetarian options exist but can be basic outside Nairobi and tourist lodges.
Cost Advice
Budget travelers can find hostels or basic guesthouses from $10-20 per night, while mid-range hotels are $40-80. Nairobi and coastal cities cost most; rural areas are cheaper for food and lodging. A local meal costs about $3 in a small restaurant, and city taxis typically start at $2-3.
