Jurisdiction Guide
India
Overview
The world's most populous country and largest democracy, India is a kaleidoscope of languages, religions, cuisines, and landscapes spanning from the Himalayas to tropical coastlines. With the world's fifth-largest economy and a booming tech sector, India offers extraordinary cultural richness, spiritual depth, and business opportunities alongside significant contrasts in wealth and infrastructure.
Best Time to Visit
October to March is the best season for most of India, cool, dry weather. The Himalayas are best May-June and September-October. The monsoon (June-September) brings heavy rain to most regions but offers lush landscapes and cultural festivals. Rajasthan is best November-February. Kerala's backwaters are pleasant October-March. The northeast is ideal March-May. Avoid the summer heat (April-June) in the plains, temperatures exceed 45°C.
Local Tips
India rewards patience and flexibility. Always carry small bills, change is scarce. Bottled water only, never drink tap water. Bargaining is expected everywhere except fixed-price shops. Head wobble means many things (yes, acknowledgment, okay), context determines meaning. Spice levels are serious, start mild and work up. UPI digital payments (Google Pay, PhonePe) work everywhere and are preferred. SIM cards are easy to get with your passport. Traffic rules are suggestions.
Cultural Etiquette
India is culturally diverse, customs vary by region and religion. Use the right hand for eating and giving/receiving items. Remove shoes before entering temples, mosques, and homes. Dress modestly, especially at religious sites, cover shoulders and knees. "Namaste" with hands pressed together is a universal greeting. Respect the head as the highest part of the body and feet as the lowest. Personal space is smaller than in Western countries.
Safety Warnings
India is generally safe for travelers but requires vigilance. Common concerns include scams (overcharging by auto-rickshaws and taxis, use meters or apps), petty theft in crowded areas, and food/water illness (eat at busy restaurants for freshness). Solo female travelers should exercise extra caution, dress conservatively and avoid isolated areas. Road safety is a serious concern, traffic is chaotic. Avoid tap water, ice, and raw salads at street stalls. Emergency: 112.
Visa & Entry Advice
Most visitors need an e-Visa, easily obtained online (from $10-25). Tourist e-Visas allow 30-day, 1-year, or 5-year stays. Business visas are available for professional activities. India does not currently offer a dedicated digital nomad visa. The Employment Visa requires a local sponsor. The Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card for people of Indian origin provides lifelong visa-free entry and work rights. Long-term tourist stays require leaving and re-entering periodically.
Getting Around
Indian Railways is one of the world's largest rail networks, trains are the best way to see the country. Book on IRCTC or 12Go Asia. Domestic flights are affordable, IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Air India connect all major cities. Auto-rickshaws and ride-hailing apps (Uber, Ola) handle city transport. Long-distance buses range from basic to luxury (Volvo sleeper). The Delhi and Mumbai metros are modern and efficient. Tuk-tuks and cycle-rickshaws add character to the journey.
Food & Drink
Indian cuisine is extraordinarily diverse. North Indian: butter chicken, biryani, tandoori, naan. South Indian: dosa, idli, sambar. Street food: chaat, pani puri, vada pav in Mumbai, pav bhaji. Bengali sweets: rasgulla, sandesh. Thali meals (unlimited refills of multiple dishes) are the best way to sample regional cuisine. Chai (tea) is ubiquitous. Lassi (yogurt drink) is refreshing. Alcohol laws vary by state, some are dry. Kingfisher is the most common beer.
