Fiji
Overview
Fiji is an island country in the South Pacific with more than 300 islands. Known for its palm-lined beaches and coral reefs, it is popular for diving and relaxation. Tourism drives much of the economy, but sugarcane farming is also important. Fijians are mostly Indigenous or of Indian descent, which shapes local food and festivals.
Best Time to Visit
May to October is the cooler, dry season and best for travel, with less humidity and rain. Cyclones are more common from November to April.
Local Tips
Cash is widely used, but cards are accepted at larger hotels and shops. Tipping is not expected. English is spoken, but a few basic Fijian words are appreciated. Buses and minibuses are the main modes of public transport on the main islands. Local SIM cards from Vodafone or Digicel are cheap and easy to find at the airport or corner stores.
Cultural Etiquette
Greeting with a simple 'bula' goes a long way. Remove shoes before entering someone's home. Dress modestly in villages and cover arms and legs. Do not touch someone's head. When offered kava, accept respectfully or touch the cup as a polite decline.
Safety Warnings
Petty theft can happen at beaches and in towns, so keep valuables secure. Mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue occur after rain. Strong currents exist at some beaches, ask locals before swimming. Roads outside main towns can have potholes and poor lighting.
Visa & Entry Advice
Most visitors from Australia, New Zealand, North America, Europe, and many Asian countries get visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry for up to four months. Extensions are possible with local immigration. Long-term work permits exist, but there are no digital nomad visas yet.
Getting Around
Buses and minibuses link main towns on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu cheaply. Taxis are common, but agree on a fare if the meter is off. Inter-island ferries connect bigger islands, while small domestic flights are best for faster travel. Roads can be rough outside of major routes.
Food & Drink
Try kokoda (raw fish in coconut milk), lovo (meat and vegetables cooked underground), and spicy Indo-Fijian curries. Street snacks like cassava chips are popular. Locally brewed kava is a mild, earthy drink with cultural importance. Tap water in Suva and Nadi is usually safe, but bottled water is better in outer islands. Veggie options exist but are limited outside towns.
Cost Advice
Backpackers can get by on under FJD 100 per day with dorms and local food. Mid-range hotels start from FJD 200 nightly, while top resorts cost much more. Nadi and Suva are pricier than rural areas or less-visited islands. Expect a basic local meal for around FJD 10 and a mid-range restaurant meal from FJD 30.
