Jurisdiction Guide
Bermuda
Overview
Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory in the North Atlantic, about 1,000 kilometers east of the US. Known for pink-sand beaches and turquoise waters, its culture blends British, Caribbean, and American influences. The economy relies largely on international finance and tourism. Strict building codes and tidy streets give the islands a neat, orderly look.
Best Time to Visit
May through early October has warm water and mild weather, good for swimming and outdoor activities. Winter is cooler and less crowded, but you can't really swim.
Local Tips
US dollars and Bermudian dollars are used interchangeably. Tipping is standard, about 15-17 percent at restaurants. English is the main language. Buses and ferries are reliable but don't run late; mopeds are popular for getting around. Buy a local SIM at the airport or in Hamilton.
Cultural Etiquette
Bermudians greet each other with a polite 'Good morning' or 'Good afternoon'. Dress is conservative compared to the Caribbean, people don't wear swimsuits away from the beach. It's polite to address elders with Mr. or Ms. Hands are usually washed before meals, and eating while walking is frowned upon in public areas.
Safety Warnings
Bermuda is safe but petty theft happens; lock valuables at your hotel. Roads are narrow and busy, and tourists on scooters sometimes get hurt, drive carefully. Hurricanes are possible between June and November. Mosquitoes can be bothersome, especially after heavy rain.
Visa & Entry Advice
Most Western nationals get visa-free stays from 21 to 180 days if arriving from the UK, US, or Canada, but check specifics as rules change. If you need a visa for the UK, you probably need one for Bermuda. There's no formal digital nomad program or easy long-term residence option.
Getting Around
No car rentals for visitors; buses, ferries, and taxis cover most places. Scooters, electric cars, and bicycles can be rented. Ride-hailing apps are not available. Bus and ferry tickets must be bought before boarding from kiosks or shops.
Food & Drink
Try fish chowder spiked with black rum and pepper sauce, and spiny lobster in season. Codfish breakfast on Sundays is a local tradition. Rum swizzle and dark 'n stormy are famous local drinks. Most restaurants add service charges, so extra tipping is not required. Vegetarian options are limited but possible in larger restaurants.
Cost Advice
Bermuda is expensive, even for basics; hotels start near $250 a night and a meal at a café runs $15-25. Public transport is affordable ($4-5 for a bus fare). Hamilton is priciest, then St. George; smaller villages can be a bit less costly if you self-cater.
