Jurisdiction Guide
Bahrain
Overview
Bahrain is a small island country in the Persian Gulf, connected to Saudi Arabia by a causeway. The capital, Manama, is a regional finance center with a skyline of glass towers. Traditional markets, fishing villages, and ancient ruins give contrast to modern malls and office buildings. Oil still plays a big role, but finance, tourism, and services have diversified the economy.
Best Time to Visit
November to March offers pleasant weather with mild temperatures. Summers are extremely hot and humid, so outdoor activities are less appealing then.
Local Tips
English is widely spoken, but basic Arabic greetings are appreciated. Cash and cards are both common, though some small shops prefer cash. Taxis often do not use meters, so agree on the fare before riding. Buy a local SIM at the airport or malls for reliable internet. Fridays are the weekly day off, so many shops open late or close entirely.
Cultural Etiquette
Dress modestly, especially in government buildings and local neighborhoods. Always use your right hand for eating or giving items. Avoid public displays of affection. During Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours. It is polite to stand when greeting elders.
Safety Warnings
Street crime is low, but keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas. Roads can be hazardous, as speeding and abrupt lane changes are common. Tap water is technically safe but most locals use bottled water. Protests sometimes occur; avoid large gatherings if you see a security presence.
Visa & Entry Advice
Citizens of many countries, including most EU nations, the US, Canada, and Australia, can get a visa on arrival or apply online for an eVisa. Gulf Cooperation Council nationals do not need a visa. Long-term work and residence visas exist but usually require employer sponsorship. No digital nomad visa at this time.
Getting Around
No trains or domestic flights, but taxis and ride-hailing apps like Uber and Careem are widespread. Public buses cover main routes in Manama and nearby towns, and are cheap but not always frequent. Most expats and locals prefer to drive, and car rentals are easy to arrange.
Food & Drink
Try machboos (spiced rice with meat or fish), grilled hammour, and sweet luqaimat dumplings. Fresh juices are popular, and karak tea is sold everywhere. Alcohol is legal in hotels and licensed venues. Vegetarian choices are readily available in Indian or Lebanese restaurants. Food safety is good in bigger establishments, but street food should be chosen with care.
Cost Advice
Bahrain is affordable compared to Dubai or Doha, though rents and restaurants are pricier in Manama. Budget travelers can eat for under 3 BHD at local cafes, while comfortable hotels start around 30 BHD per night. Imported goods and alcohol cost more than local items.
