Jurisdiction Guide
Bahamas
Overview
The Bahamas is an island country in the Atlantic Ocean, just southeast of Florida. It is made up of over 700 islands and cays, but only about 30 are inhabited. Tourism and offshore finance drive the economy, with cruise ships and resort guests making up much of daily life. Bahamians speak English, have Afro-Caribbean roots, and a relaxed social atmosphere.
Best Time to Visit
Mid-December to April is the most pleasant because of dry, cooler weather. Hurricanes are possible from June to November, with September being most risky.
Local Tips
Tipping is expected, usually 10–15 percent at restaurants unless service charge is included. US dollars and Bahamian dollars are accepted interchangeably. Public buses ('jitneys') run on Nassau and Grand Bahama but stop early, so taxis or car rentals are often needed for late nights. Free WiFi is common in hotels and cafes, but SIM cards from BTC or Aliv offer better island-wide coverage. English is the official language and widely understood.
Cultural Etiquette
Greet with a friendly 'Good morning' or 'Good afternoon', Bahamians value politeness. Swimwear is fine on beaches but cover up in towns and shops. Churches are important, so dress modestly at religious sites and events. Avoid loud or aggressive behavior; island life is unhurried.
Safety Warnings
Petty theft, especially of bags and phones, can happen in Nassau and Freeport, so stay alert in crowded areas. Some local drivers go fast on narrow roads. Tap water is usually safe in cities but bottled water is better on small islands. Hurricanes can disrupt travel, follow local advice during storm season.
Visa & Entry Advice
Most visitors from the US, EU, UK, and Canada can enter visa-free for up to 8 months with proof of onward travel and funds. Others must apply at Bahamian consulates before arrival. There is no official digital nomad visa but long stays for remote work are possible if you meet entry rules. Extensions and work permits require application.
Getting Around
Domestic flights connect major islands, as there is no rail. Jitneys are cheap on Nassau and Grand Bahama for short hops but do not cover remote areas. Inter-island mail boats sail weekly but are slow. Renting a car or golf cart is popular on the Out Islands. Ride-hailing apps are not common; licensed taxis are easy to find at airports.
Food & Drink
Conch salad and cracked conch are local specialties, usually made fresh with lime and chili. Rock lobster, grouper, and johnny cake are also popular. Seafood is the focus but many places serve chicken or pork curries for other tastes. Kalik and Sands are the main beers, and locals drink sky juice (gin, coconut water, sweet milk). Many cheap takeout shops offer hearty portions, but vegetarians may need to ask for custom plates.
Cost Advice
The Bahamas is pricey, especially Nassau and Paradise Island, where basic hotel rooms start around $150 per night. Family-run guesthouses on smaller islands cost less. A local meal can be $10–15, while a sit-down dinner is from $30. Taxi rides start at $10–15 even for short distances.
